Wood-engraved frontispiece, plates and numerous wood-engraved illustrations in text. Original publisher’s brown decorated cloth, front cover and spine blocked in black and gilt (hinges cracked, spine ends a bit frayed, corners rubbed). FIRST EDITION, second state, without the tail-piece on p. 441 depicting an urn, flames and the head of Twain, and with the caption on p. 443 reading "The St. Charles Hotel." BAL 3411.
