Original publisher’s brown decorated cloth, upper cover and spine blocked in black and gilt (spine ends gently frayed, rubbing at corners, joints a bit tender). Provenance: F.W. Goodhue gift inscription to L.R. Hanson dated 1884. FIRST EDITION, FIRST STATE, Intermediate A, with the tail-piece on p. 441 depicting an urn, flames and the head of Twain, and the caption on p. 443 reading “The St. Charles Hotel.” BAL 3411.
