This work is closely related to a grisaille study of a young woman by Anton Raphael Mengs once thought to represent his daughter. That work (S. Roettgen, Anton Raphael Mengs 1728-1779. Das malerische und ziechnerische Werk, Munich, 1999, pp. 332-3, no. 268), formerly in the Barberini Collection in Rome, was well-known to Italian artists in the late 19th century.
