More about the artist:
Charles was born February 1, 1933 in Honolulu, received his BFA at University of Hawaii, MFA at New York University, returning to Hawaii after a military tour of duty in Berlin. He was a noted and accomplished water color and ceramic artist with exhibitions in Hawaii, several mainland locations, Berlin, Germany, Victoria, Canada, and Naha, Okinawa. He earned numerous awards and served as a consultant to the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and executed commissions for State public places. His work is in the permanent collection of the State Museum of Art and the Honolulu Museum of Art. As an educator, he was selected by Look magazine as Teacher of the Year and Hawaii's Young Educator, a national award. He taught at several local schools, including Radford, Hawaii Community College with more than 30 years at McKinley High school as Chairman of the Art Department. Mr. Higa believed that environment and people inspired his art. The wonder in the variety of spaces, shapes, sizes, colors, lines, and values in the natural and human made world of ours, encouraged, challenged, and affected him in both two and three dimensional surfaces. He also tried to capture the spirit of the East, and the structure of the West in his work. He found this expression a communication to all to appreciate and respect natural and human accomplishments.
