Description
The bucolic beauty of the Mayenne river is on full display in this charming poster by Alo. The small town of Sainte-Suzanne, located in northwestern France, is singled out for its old-world village and charm.
The region that follows the La Mayenne riverbed is still today considered a quieter part of France. Mostly rural, the region boasts fresh produce from local farms, fly-fishing, and woodworking. The interior regions of France saw a resurgence in popularity during the Industrial Revolution of the 1880s, when train travel made visiting this remote area more feasible. This poster was created for the Chemins de Fer de l'Etat, a national railway that serviced France.
Charles-Jean Hallo, more famously known as Alo (1882-1969) was a French painter, draftsman, illustrator, and photographer. Alo attended Saint-Ignace College, going on to continue his studies in the arts at the Dijon ecole des Beaux Arts in France. He is best known as the creator of tourist posters for The French National Railroad and many other private railway companies. Alo's work demonstrates a skilled use of color, depth and perspective. His characteristic signature, "ALO", appears on all of his illustrations, including this one.
This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition.
