Large example over 3/4" height of broad form and indented profile with quartered nubs forming a saltire. Deeply incised with a trefoil, the outer two branches bifurcated. The trefoil (triple leaf) motif was popular with Vikings and believed to represent fertility with sprouting buds. Made by the open face mold technique and the decoration hand cut or chased. For Vikings, the heart stood for bravery, fortitude, loyalty, integrity, all attributes of the warrior. It is said that Hrungnir, with whom Thor dueled (assisted by a sorceress), had a heart of stone.
