Item Details
Description
Southeast Asia, Philippines, Luzon Island, Ifugao culture, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden female figure known as a bulul with lovely caramel hues. The figure stands nude atop an integral cylindrical plinth, legs delineated and left arm hanging, while holding a petite quadruped upside-down atop her right shoulder. Her enlarged head features close-set ovoid eyes, a triangular nose, pursed lips, and a single flared ear, all beneath a hemispherical cranium. Bululs are abstract representations of ancestors that were created to serve as protectors of the rice crops and were placed outside to watch over the fields. Size: 2.5" W x 9.4" H (6.4 cm x 23.9 cm)

Provenance: private Massachusetts, USA collection of Kahlil and Jean Gibran. Kahlil Gibran (1922-2008, also known as Kahlil George Gibran) was a successful mid-20th century Magic Realist painter and sculptor.

Minor abrasions to plinth, limbs, body, animal, and head, with several stable fissures, and minor softening to some finer details particularly on face, otherwise intact and very good. Great patina throughout.
