Charming Roman Leaded Bronze Horse Fibula
Charming Roman Leaded Bronze Horse Fibula
Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A lovely leaded bronze fibula of a horse shown in profile facing right. Enveloped in a rich patina, the ancient animal prances forward with one front leg raised as his lengthy tail drapes behind his slender mid-section. A hefty yoke is placed around his broad neck which curves to a naturalistic head with a protruding snout and perky ears. Incised striations adorn the neck, intended to represent a neatly manicured mane. A pin with fittings can be found on the verso, previously allowing for the noble steed to be pinned to one's tunic or toga and worn. This charming fibula may have belonged to a person who participated in military parades or owned a racing horse. Size: 1.5" L x 1.1" H (3.8 cm x 2.8 cm); 1.8" H (4.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010

Condition
Pin slightly bent and fitting filled, which impedes function. Expected nicks, abrasions, and softening of detail, commensurate with age and wear. Otherwise, intact and excellent with lovely patina.
