Item Details
Description
The lot features an Indian tanned hide and beaded tobacco pouch from the Comanche Native American Indians of the late 19th Century. This circa 1880 bag is comprised of Indian brain tanned Buffalo Bison hide with typical Southern Plains geometric beadwork pattern in glass trade seed beads in colors of seme-transparent dark green, chalk white, red and greasy yellow. Just below the bag opening is a beaded border and the original hide tie strap is still intact. At the base is long, frilly hide fringes hanging down with a nice patina. There is some minor discoloration on the backside with two vertical borders on either side of beadwork. The bag has a nice coloring and appears to be well preserved with little to no bead loss and slightly stiffening but still supple hide. Provenance: From the ex-collection of Cyrus Eaton of London, England. Measures overall 22 inches in length by 4 inches wide.
