English Pictorial Needlework by Jane Dickinson 1813. Embroidered in wool on linen. Strawberry and vine border, enclosing a cabbage rose with large foliate spray over two baskets of fruit, over the poem: Virtue / Virtue the chiefest beauty of the mind / The noblest Ornament of Humankind / Virtue our safeguard and our guid / ing star / That leads to Reason when our Sen / -ses err. Over a well worked picture of a whitewashed cottage with thatch roof in a wood, with hills and etc. All over Jane Dickinson A.D. 1813. Under glass, in gilt and ebonized frame. {Approximate dimensions: 11 x 14 inches, sight; 15 1/2 x 17 1/2 inches framed.}. Condition: 5/8" square tear to very lowest right corner, does not interrupt scene. Minor discoloration to background, remounting suggested as it appears acid from back is in direct contact with linen backing.
