Description
**First Time At Auction**
Native American, United States, Pacific Northwest coast, Columbia Plateau area, Nez Perce, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A trio of flat corn husk bags, each finely woven from hemp grass with yarn embroidery as well as cotton cloth hems and deer hide drawstrings. The largest has horizontal registers of stepped red triangular shapes on the natural brown ground and a cotton cloth lining on the opening lip. The next has registers of chevrons on one side and diamonds in blue, green, yellow, and red and a cloth reinforcing the opening lip as well as a drawstring of leather woven through piercings. The last is decorated with diamond patterning in red, blue, and brown hues against the natural ground and a leather drawstring cord. Woven cornhusk bags like these were sought after trade items in the Plateau trade network. As time went on, these bags were created more ornately with brightly colored embroidery of cornhusk, acrylic yarn!
