Description
**First Time At Auction**
South Asia, India / Burma border, Nagaland, Naga people, ca. 19th century CE. This is a massive wooden double mortar shaped as a bench for the convenience of sitting while pounding. The base has a long pedestal foot, thick and sturdy to hold the weight of the lengthy top and any workers. The seat of the bench is flat with slightly upturned tips and a central ridge between the two mortar basins. Two people could sit and grind grain or rice in rhythm. The lustrous surface of the seat area has been smoothed and polished from countless hours of use, and the interior of the basins have been pounded into conical impressions. Size: 67.5" L x 11" W x 11" H (171.4 cm x 27.9 cm x 27.9 cm)

Condition
Minor surface abrasions from use as mortar and light mineral deposits within the mortar basins. Some stable pressure fissures in the base, but all is intact and very good. Wood has a lustrous smooth patina and deep black hue. Massive size and very sturdy.
