Heva Coomans (Belgium, 1860-1939) oil on canvas painting depicting figures in and outside a pottery studio in an ancient Mediterranean city, likely Pompeii. Signed "Heva Coomans" lower left. Housed in a carved early 20th century American style giltwood frame. Sight: 21 1/2" H x 29 1/2" W. Framed: 27 3/4" H x 35 3/4" W. Biography: Heva Coomans was born in Paris, the daughter of the painter Pierre Olivier Joseph Coomans (1816-1889) and Adelaide Lacroix (1838-1884). Her sister Diana Coomans was also a painter and her brother Oscar Coomans (1848-1884) was a poet. Like her father and sister, she painted romantic portrayals of the original inhabitants of Pompeii before the eruption of Vesuvius, but she is also is known for depicting young women in other mythological or heroic scenes. Condition
Overall good condition with faintly visible stretcher marks to right side of canvas. 1/4" x 1/4" puncture, lower left of canvas. Frame with natural age shrinkage, largest 2 1/2" x 5/8". Canvas slightly loose in frame.
