Description
Manner of John (1718-1765) / Thomas Vardy (1751–1788), and William Kent (1685-1748), carved giltwood bench or daybed in the George II taste, having a canted-form, red velvet upholstery with two bolster pillows, curved arms with palm leaf decoration, gadrooned apron, and rising on tapering squared baluster legs with husks on block feet. Unmarked. Note: The carving on this bench corresponds to decoration of the famed Palm Room at Spencer House, London, designed in part by John Vardy and James "Athenian" Stuart (1713-1788). Approx. h. 39.5", w. 81", d. 30".
Condition
Scattered chips to gilding; frame is structurally sound.
