2 volumes in similar embossed vellum bindings: 1. [SOCRATES AND SOZOMENI.] Socratis Scholastici et Hermiae Sozomeni Historia Ecclesiastica. Henricus Valesius Graecum textum collatis MSS. codicibus emendavit, Latine vertit, & Annotationibus illustravit. Adjecta est ad calcem disputatio Archelai Episcopi adversus Manichaeum. Amsterdam, Henricum Wetstenium, 1700. In Latin and Greek. Folio (15 1/4 x 9 1/2 in.). Full parchment, front and back with embossed blocked design around central embossed decoration. Seven raised bands and hand-inscribed title to spine. Small hand-written catalog number label at foot of spine, all edges stained red. Good. Parchment is darkened and soiled, corners bumped/slightly warped inward, split to hinge of spine at top; split to front and back pastedowns, free endpapers and first title page with folds and wrinkles, toning and foxing; previous owner's inscription to pastedown. 2. LUCANUS, MARCUS ANNAEUS. M. Annaei Lucani Cordubensis Pharsalia. Sive Belli Civilis Libri Decemb. Cum Scholiaste, hucusque inedito, et Notis Integris... Leiden: Samuelem Luchtmans, 1728. Latin volume: Lucan's epic poem with scholarly notes and extracts from twenty authors, a supplement from Thomas Maji, and commentary and notations by others. 4to (10 3/8 x 8 5/8 in.). Full parchment, front and back with embossed blocked design around central embossed decoration. Six raised bands and hand-inscribed title to spine. All edges stained. Engraved frontispiece and a fold-out map before the first book. Very Good. The parchment of spine is considerably darkened, covers darkened/soiled. Splits showing on hinges at top of spine. Other than toning and foxing on first few and last several pages/endpapers, foxing is light to none throughout. Bookplate for Charles Drury on pastedown, and previous owner's bookplate on free endpaper.
