Description
ALCORN, John (1935-1992). Uncanny in Cans / 7 UP. 1969. 20 11/16 x 33 5/8”. Linen backed. Closed tears and restored losses in corners; repaired tears, some with inpainting, in image; scattered creases in margins and image B+/B. This poster was part of an ad campaign in the late 1960s to revitalize 7 UP, which was then generally used as a mixer or upset stomach remedy rather than a standalone drink. The posters featured psychedelic, hippie, and pop culture influenced imagery intended to make 7 UP more appealing to younger customers. Capturing the countercultural and antiwar moment around Woodstock in 1969, the advertisers branded 7 UP “the UnCola,” using “uncanny“ here and similar wordplay in the posters (see also next lot).
