JFK Signed Check with Ironic Connection, PSA/DNA Slabbed & Graded NM-MT 8
A printed check, No. 2682, drawn on The First National Bank of New York, with a payment of $311.36, dated July 11, 1959, made out to Cape & Islands Flight Service, for a trip to the Kennedy Compound during his Presidential Campaign. On verso are several bank stamps, including one which bleeds through to the front, pinholes from a removed staple in the upper left, flattened folds, and cancel punches. The check is boldly signed. Encapsulated and PSA/DNA graded NM-MT 8. The slab measures 12.5" X 5.5".
The Kennedy Compound, which consists of three houses on six acres of waterfront property on Cape Cod, would be used as a base for his successful 1960 U.S. presidential campaign. This check was written in the middle of Kennedy's campaign for President for a flight to the compound. Ironically, 40 years and 5 days later on July 16, 1999, Kennedy's son died when the light aircraft he was flying crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts.
A similar check sold in October of 2021 for $28,494 in RR Auctions. The check at RR was not slabbed or graded by PSA and did not fulfill its purpose as it was apparently uncashed.Â
