AN INDONESIAN BUGIS ALAMANG SWORD
Indonesia, Sulawesi, late 19th century to early 20th century. The long Alamang sword of the Bugis people with a straight steel (iron) blade and a finely incised silver collar, depicting floral and ornamental patterns, holding the wooden hilt. The fabric coated wood scabbard with silver applications, showing floral and ornamental decorations as well. The Alamang symbolizes sovereignty, wealth, and dignity of a kingdom.
Condition: Fine condition with traces of age and wear, and age hairlines to the wood.
Provenance: Dutch private collection.
