c. 1898 U.S. Navy Steel Blade Practice Cutlass
c. 1898 Spanish-American War, United States Navy "Practice Cutlass" with Steel Blade and Basket Guard, Choice Very Fine.
A scarce United States Navy "Practice Cutlass" measuring 34.75" overall, with its original Steel Blade measuring 24.75" long. Made with a Steel Basket Guard and a blunted steel blade with no sharp knife edge (to keep the practicing cadets safe). Most of its original black paint survives on the hilt and grip and the leather rain guard (chappe) is intact. The blade has been cleaned long ago and it remains in very nice smooth condition. This practice pattern first began in use appearing around the time of the Spanish-American War (1898).
