Tintype Identified: Terrance Connell 4th New York Infantry
c. 1860s, Civil War Tintype 1/6 plate photograph of a uniformed Union Civil War soldier identified as Terrance Connell, (Company E, 4th New York Infantry), housed in a splint case, Extremely Fine.
In this image, Terrance Connell is wearing a Union Army frock coat, a waist belt with oval "US" plate, and a shako with initials "BG" with gold Hand-painted highlights. His buttons, breastplate and belt plate are similarly gilded. Shown standing at attention, he is holding his Model 1861 Springfield rifle. No rank devices are visible on his coat. Image surface does have some minor scratches or blemishes with a minor bend in the case. A typed paper tag is attached to the backside of the case cover with identification.
At twenty-three years old, Connell enlisted on May 2, 1861 in New York as a private. He enlisted for two years of service in the Union Army. Connell was mustered into Company E, 4th New York Infantry (also known as the "Brooklyn Guards") by Captain William B. Parisen. This unit was commanded by Colonel Edward McKean Hudson. During his service, Connell fought at Antietam and Fredericksburg. Connell was later promoted to the rank of corporal. He was discharged in May 1863.
