Artist: Leon Bakst (1866-1924).Techinique: Drawing on paper.Measures: 18 x 30 cmBiography:León (Lev) Nikoláyevich Bakst (Russian, ЛеоÌн (Лев) ÐиколаÌевич БакÑÑ‚; Goradnia, May 10, 1866 - Rueil-Malmaison, December 27, 1924) was a Russian painter.Leon (Lev) Bakst was born, under the name Lev Rosenberg, in Goradnia (now Belarus) into a middle-class Jewish family. After graduating from the gymnasium, he studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Art as a free student, working part-time as a book illustrator. In his first exhibition (1889) he took Bakst's surname from his maternal grandmother Baxter's name. At the beginning of the 1890s he exhibited his works with the Society of watercolorists. Between 1893 and 1897 he lived in Paris, where he studied at the Académie Julian while then still visiting Saint Petersburg. From the mid-1890s he became a member of the circle of writers and artists formed by Sergei Diaguilev and Alexandre Benois that would become the Mir iskusstva (World of Art) artistic movement. In 1899, he co-founded the influential magazine Mir iskusstva (ru: Мир иÑкуÑÑтва (журнал)) with Sergey Diaghilev. His graphics for the Art World made him famous. He continued with easel painting as well as made portraits of Filipp Malyavin (1899), Vasili Rozanov (1901), Andréi Bely (1905), Zinaída Guippius (1906). He also worked as an art teacher for the sons of Grand Duke Vladimir Aleksándrovich. In 1902 he received the order from Tsar Nicholas II of Russia to paint the Reception of the Russian Marines in Paris. In 1898 he showed his works at the First Exhibition of Russian and Finnish Artists organized by Diáguilev; in exhibitions of the World of Art, as well as in Secession in Munich, exhibitions of the Union of Russian Artists, etc.During the Russian Revolution of 1905 Bakst worked for the magazines Zhúpel, Ãdskaya pochta, Satyricón, while working for the art magazine Apollón. Scenic design.Since the late 1900s, Bakst worked primarily as a stage designer. Bakst designed stage constructions for Greek tragedies, and in 1908 he achieved notoriety as a stage painter for Diaghilev and the Russian Ballets (Cleopatra 1909, Shajerezada 1910, Carnaval 1910, Narcissus 1911, Daphnis et Chloé 1912). All this time he lived in Europe because as a Jew he had no right to live permanently outside the settlement area.During his visits to St. Petersburg he taught at the Zvántseva School. One of his students was Marc Chagall (1908-1910). In 1910 they separated. Bakst warned Chagall not to go to Paris as according to Bakst it would be detrimental to Chagall's art and financially he would probably starve. Chagall left anyway, he didn't die and he did find his style. In 1914 he was elected a member of the Imperial Academy of Arts.In 1918, he ended his relationship with Diagilev and the Ballets Russes. He died in 1924 at Rueil-Malmaison near Paris from lung problems.
