Description
DESCRIPTION: A Manuel Mendive Hoyo (Havana, 1944) syncretic art acrylic painting on canvas titled "A la Orilla del RIo" ("By The River Side"). Painter, performance artist, and sculptor Manuel Mendive draws inspiration from his native Cuba and African oral traditions in his paintings of imaginary anthropomorphic figures in Surreal landscapes. Mendive fuses human and animal features, depicting animal spotted figures with human heads, one central figure with three breasts and one leg, breastfeeding a child. Framed and with COA.
Born into a Santeria-practicing family, Mendive work reflects his syncretic interest in Yoruba-Lucumi mythology, the Middle Passage, and dance. He graduated with honors in painting and sculpture from Havana Academia de Artes Plasticas San Alejandro in 1962. Mendive participated in his first solo exhibition in Havana in 1964, and later showed his work at the 1988 Venice Biennale. In 2018, Mendive exhibited a new body of work at the Bronx Museum of the Arts alongside photographs of a performance in a Cuban rainforest taken by his longtime collaborator John Rowe.
CIRCA: 20th Century.
ORIGIN: Cuba.
DIMENSIONS: H: 23 1/2" W: 22 3/8".
