Item Details
Description
Latin America, Mexico, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A wonderful pair of leather and steel Chihuahua style spurs inlaid with silver. The silver work forms a geometric meander or Greek key pattern on the outer half of the u-shaped band, visible to anyone admiring the spurs. Eight-pointed spiked rowels rotate from a short housing at the center of the u-band. At the end of the arm are two button shaped rivets that connect a pair of leather straps with buckles for adjusting the size. Mexican vaqueros (and occasional vaqueras) are the quintessential cowboy, and their techniques for managing cattle across the wide-open landscapes of Mexico and what is today the American West were the inspiration for the iconic figure of America's Wild West. Spurs were symbols of status since owning a horse was a sign of wealth. If the flashy silver inlay on these spurs did not draw attention, the high-pitched jingling that these make certainly would! Size just metal spur: 5" L x 3.5" W x 2" H (12.7 cm x 8.9 cm x 5.1 cm); leather strap: 10" L x 2.75" W (25.4 cm x 7 cm); quality of silver: 80%
