Item Details
Description
East Asia, Japan, Meiji Period, ca. early 20th century CE. A lovely pair of Negoro lacquered wood trays, one is a lengthy ovoid form and the other a discoidal shape. The large serving platter has a rim encircling the periphery, and the interior and exterior base are painted black with red lacquer on the inner and exterior of the rim - known as Negoro - and with age and time, the upper layer wears away to reveal the vivid black underneath the red and create a striking, mottled surface. The other circular tray is painted with Negoro lacquer on the exterior, and the interior is black with speckles of red. Negoro is a popular style of lacquerware developed in the Negoro-ji temple during the 14th century, and this technique has ensued for generations because the gradually changing surface colors are beautiful signifiers of age and the durability of the items! Size (large tray): 16" L x 11" W x 1" H (40.6 cm x 27.9 cm x 2.5 cm); (smaller tray): 5.75" Diameter x 1.5" H (14.6 cm x 3.8 cm)
