Description
“The Capture of Major André” oil on canvas after Asher Brown Durand 1845, the original now in the Birmingham Museum of Art; in an old frame. Height of frame 31 inches (78.5 cm.) X width of frame 36 inches ( 91.5 cm.). PROVENANCE: From a estate Patchogue NY collection. NOTE: John André (1751-1780) was a major in the British Army and head of its Secret Service in America during the American Revolutionary War. Shown detained in his stockings in this artwork by Militiamen near Tarrytown, they found incriminating papers in his boots (shown on the ground) which led to his hanging as a spy by the Continental Army for assisting Benedict Arnold's attempted surrender of West Point, New York, to the British. Commissioned by the Art Union Lottery in 1845, this is an accurate 19th century copy.
