Description
Exceptional Quality, Excellent Example of the artists work. Signed oil on board seascape painting by Handel Lamp decorator and noted Meriden, Connecticut artist Frederick Matzow (1861 - 1938). Seascape painting showing a rocky coastline with two sailing ships in the middle ground (one is in the far background, on the horizon). A large stone promontory juts out into the sea in the background. Coastal vegetation grows on the rocks. As a Norwegian - American, Matzow may be depicting either Norway or New England. Here, Matzow uses colors uncharacteristic of his work, using bright blues, yellows and oranges in addition to his usual muted earth tones. Signed in lower left corner, "F. Matzow". Painting is in good visual condition overall, with minor discoloration of paint and some craquelure of surface. There is one area in the top center of the painting that seems to have cracked. Possibly repairable / restorable. Gilt frame with tigering. 17 1/2" tall by 25 1/2" wide (framed), about 13 3/4" by 22" (board). Keywords: America, Americana, CT, art, fancy, decor, decoration
