Despite its success, Ford soon abandoned the original Thunderbird concept and a larger, four-seat 'Square Bird' version was introduced for 1958, the original two-seater being retrospectively dubbed 'Little Bird'. The first of the line to adopt unitary construction, the 'Square Bird' was superseded for 1961 by the longer, sleeker 'Projectile' or 'Bullet' T-Bird. Endowed with a smoother ride and improved handling, the 'Bullet Bird' was the most comfortable and quiet version to date and came with Ford's mighty 390ci (6.4-litre) V8 engine as standard equipment. An across-the-range revamp saw a new fourth generation Thunderbird emerge for the 1964 season featuring deeply sculpted sides and two large rectangular rear light pods set within a massive bumper, its appearance giving rise to the sobriquet, 'Sculpture Bird'. 1967 saw the arrival of the fifth generation, nicknamed 'Big Bird' on account of its increased size and historically significant for the addition of a four-door model to the range for the first time. This was the Landau Sedan, which somewhat unusually featured front-opening 'suicide' rear doors. Other notable 'Big Bird' developments included reversion to a traditional separate chassis and the absence of a convertible model from the range. The four-door Landau Sedan would remain unique to this generation, disappearing from the range with the sixth generation's introduction in late 1971.
Powered by the 428ci (7.0-litre) 345bhp V8 engine, this rare Landau Sedan was purchased from Gesswein Motors Inc of Milbank, South Dakota on 5th April 2018 and comes with its South Dakota title and a copy of the purchase order.
