Smith, Melbourne Ford Jr. (American, 1914 - 1993), Round Brasilia Cathedral Coffee Table, for Broyhill, circa 1960's, walnut, custom made glass top, brass fittings, apparently unmarked, 16.5 x 40 x 40 inches, The Broyhill Brasilia Cathedral Coffee Table was styled after the framework of Oscar Niemeyer's Cathedral Metropolitan Nossa Senhora Aparecida. Introduced at the 1962 Seattle World's Fair the Brasilia Line by Broyhill took its styling cues from the architecture of Brazil's newly created capital city Brasilia which was designed by Oscar Niemeyer between 1956 and 1961. Several of Niemeyer's buildings featured supporting columns of sweeping parabolic shapes and forms that would become the signature of the modernist architecture of Brasilia, as well as Broyhill's namesake furniture series.
Condition
in generally good condition, apart from minor scratches and scuffs on table top and glass top, a few areas of minor wear and staining to underside, outlines of labels
