19TH C PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG GIRL American, Boston, Ma. c. 1846-1850. Nice early portrait of a young child dressed in red sitting under a tree with village landscape in background. Of great interest is fact that child is holding a book and pointing to year of birth and death. Displayed in exceptional gilded frame. Canvas shoes stamp on verso: “Prepared by O. Stearns Boston”. Ahlers & Ogletree Co. OS: 40” high x 34” wide. SS: 30” high x 25” wide. Untouched original condition: scattered loss, craquelure. Provenance: From the estate of Mr. & Mrs. Lawrence G. Hogan, Massachusetts. Note: Canvas-maker Oliver Stearns used this particular stamp during his tenure at his Washington St. address in Boston, Massachusetts. Canvas was likely prepared between 1846-1850.Note: Painting comes with original early photograph showing painting hanging in parlor surrounded by Gothic Revival furnishings.
