Description
Large Sarcophagus Brass Rubbing Sir George Felbirgg c1400 - Rare
Measures - 62" h x 21 1/2" w
Large black and gold replica - marked on back Sir George Felbrigge - Playford Church, Suffolk England ad1400
The original version of this knight is found in Suffolk, a county particularly rich in monumental military brasses, in the parish church of Playford. He is wearing the armour of the Camail and Jupon period, used by the military aristocracy in the second half of the fourteenth century, a period dominated by the 100 Years’ War.
Camail was the curtain of chain-mail hanging from the bottom of a tall Bassinet (the type of helmet worn at the time), and the Jupon was the sleeveless outer garment that fitted over a large globular breastplate and which reached halfway down the thighs.
A version of this armour can also be seen in the pious effigy of the Black Prince at Canterbury Cathedral, where he is presented as a holy warrior: an image both troubling and evocative, given the Plantagenet’s blood–soaked victories in France, and the emergence of English as the language used by the ruling elite at precisely this moment in history.
