1830s Folk Portraits Glens Falls NY with Provenance

Item Details

Description

The subjects of this pair of c 1830 portraits are Frederick and Caroline Williams of Glens Falls NY. The artist is unknown.
These were purchased by our consigner at auction from F. O. Bailey in Portland ME in 1988. A letter from the auction house states that these were from the ownerï¿½s (Joy and Jack Piscopo) personal collection. They purchased them out of the private collection of the curator of the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Collection at Williamsburg, and that they came directly from the family prior to that.
These paintings were featured in a Maine Antiques Digest article in 1978 examining unusual inscriptions on early paintings. As you can see, these are inscribed on the verso "Hands off if you please!" And "Keep your paws off!!"
These paintings measure overall 26.5” by 28.5” and 25.5” by 26”
