Description
**Originally Listed At $300**

Northern Europe, England, London, ca. 1716 CE. A fascinating codex of around 300 pages in length entitled "Posthumous Works in Prose and Verse, Written in the Time of the Civil Wars and Reign of King Charles II by Mr. Samuel Butler, Author of Hudibras from Original MSS. And Scarce and Valuable Pieces formerly Printed with Key to Hudibras." The intriguing book was edited by Sir Roger L'Estrange and printed for Sam Briscoe, R. Smith and G. Strahan at the Royal Exchange in 1716. Bound to a lovely brown cover adorned with an abstract design, the book features an elaborate frontispiece displaying a portrait of Samuel Butler. The inside of the front cover is inscribed "Edward / Beck / 1768" and another indecipherable note is penned on the cover page. All pages are printed with Early Modern English script in black or red ink and the front page of each chapter is embellished by a floral motif. The fine codex is the 4th edition and presented in 2 volumes. Size: 3.25" L x 1.6" W x 5.375" H (8.3 cm x 4.1 cm x 13.7 cm)

Samuel Butler (baptized 14 February 1613 and died 25 September 1680) was a poet and satirist, who is most famous for his long satirical poem "Hudibras," which criticized religious sectarianism during the English Civil Wars.
