Description
**First Time At Auction**
Native American, Southwestern United States, Zuni, ca. 20th to 21st century CE. A hand-carved elk antler statue of a fetish figure as well as a silver brooch with inlaid stones and shells. The brooch is inlaid with enamel, turquoise, and abalone shell, and is wearable with a pin and clasp on the verso. The corn maiden fetish is hand-carved by Zuni artist Claudia Peina. She stands upright on delineated feet that support her rounded, elongated body, which is reminiscent of a corncob. Inlaid across her body are turquoise, black stones, and red coral. Peina is a Zuni carver from a family of many recognized artists. She took up carving as a teenager, unsurprisingly with such close artistic mentors such as her grandfather, George Haloo Chee Chee, brother Colvin Peina, half siblings Troy and Gabe Sice, and uncles Miguel and Ramie Haloo! She enjoys working mainly with antler and her pieces often feature bear fetishes or corn maidens. Size of maiden: 2.5" L x 0.75" W (6.4 cm x 1.9 cm); brooch: 1.6" L x 1.125" W (4.1 cm x 2.9 cm); silver quality: 95%; weight: 15.6 grams
Provenance: private Himrod collection, Anaheim, California, USA
