East Asia, China, Neolithic Period, ca. 3000 to 2000 BCE. A wonderful pottery jar presenting a globular body, round shoulder, tubular neck, and flared rim, all sitting upon a circular base. The neck is flanked by a pair of ribbon-form handles that arch from the top of the shoulder to the rim of the vessel. A black-painted abstract design contrasts the red ground of the jar, creating a band of diamond motifs along the body and a pattern of vertical striations on the neck. Size: 5.4" in diameter x 5.1" H (13.7 cm x 13 cm)

Expected surface wear with nicks, abrasions, and pitting, commensurate with age. Possible repair to handles. Otherwise, excellent with nice earthen encrustations and liberal remaining pigments.
