Giuseppe Castiglione (1688-1766) was an Italian, formerly Giuseppe gastirione, born in Milan. In the 54th year of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty (1715), Giuseppe Castiglione came to China as a monk of the Catholic Jesuit Church to preach. Then he entered the palace into Ruyi hall and became a court painter. He once participated in the design of the Western Tower of the Yuanmingyuan and served successively in the Kang, Yong and Qian dynasties, He has been engaged in painting in China for more than 50 years.
