KOICHI OKUMURA (1904-1974) was born in Kyoto, and lived, worked and taught art in this old imperial city until his death in 1974. He studied Japanese painting with Nishimura Goun at the Kyoto City Specialist School of Painting. Before WWII Okumura became an established Japanese painter who exhibited at the state-sponsored exhibitions, and later Okumura became a professor at Kyoto City University of Arts. Collectors of Japanese prints know him for the prints he designed for the Kyoto publisher Unsodo. Unsodo was a leading woodblock publisher in Kyoto. In 1948 Koichi Okumura contributed to a series of twelve woodblock prints, titled "Twelve Views of Kyoto", and in the 1950s he designed the series "Eight Scenic Views of Kyoto", and "Scenery of Kyoto", as well as other views of Japan and the Kyoto area.
