Description
(1875 - 1965) French physician and theologian, a specialist in tropical medicine. He received the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize for his philosophy of 'Reverence for Life', expressed most famously in his founding and sustaining the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Lambarene. Good content A.L.S., 1p. oblong 8vo., Labarene, Gabon, July 15, 1965 in French, in response to an invitation to become an honorary member of the Huguenot Society of America. The doctor mentions that he is well aware of the society and thanks them for the honor, noting: 'Already as a child I had admiration for the Huguenots...' He concludes: 'My hospital is running well, but it became bigger than I ever imagined. We have at present 6 doctors and 46 nurses in the hospital building and there are 560 beds for the sick...' Folds, else very good, with transmittal envelope. A copy of Schweitzer's admission to the benevolent society is included.
