Description
(1745 - 1829) Politician from Massachusetts who served in a variety of roles, most notably as the third United States Secretary of State under Presidents George Washington and John Adams. He also represented Massachusetts in both houses of Congress as a member of the Federalist Party. Manuscript D.S. as Secretary of War, 1p. legal folio, Washington, Feb. 6, 1793 to Nathaniel Appleton. In part: '...The Widow of a certain Edmund Conner who was inserted in the list of Invalid pensioners transmitted to the State of Massachusetts in the years 1789 and 1790 has applied to this Office for the pension...alledging [sic] that the same has never been received...I therefore request that you will examine into this matter and inform me what sums of Money appear to be unpaid ...and that in any case are yet due...' A light marginal toned spot, else very good. Conner served aboard the privateer SKY ROCKET and was wounded at Penobscot before the ship was destroyed to prevent capture, August 14, 1779.
