Description
Pair of items once belonging to a sailor serving aboard the USS KEARSARGE, including the man's navy blue wool sailor's cap, lined with wire insert. The cap bears an authentic, period cap tally with gold wire embroidery: 'U.S.S. KEARSARGE'. Lettering a bit soiled from use, else very good. Sold with a 4 x 7 in. (overall) photo of the presumed owner, the mount a bit water-stained. USS Kearsarge (BB-5) was the lead ship of her class of pre-dreadnought battleships, named after the sloop-of-war Kearsarge. Her keel was laid down by the Newport News Shipbuilding Company of Virginia, on 30 June 1896. Between 1903 and 1907 Kearsarge served in the North Atlantic Fleet, and from 1907 to 1909 she sailed as part of the Great White Fleet. In 1909 she was decommissioned for modernization, which was finished in 1911. In 1915 she served in the Atlantic, and between 1916 and 1919 she served as a training ship.
