Description
[CIVIL WAR]. A group of 6 documents identified to William Bennett, Co. C, 19th Ohio Infantry.

6 Civil War documents of William Bennett, Corporal/Sergeant of Co. C, 19th Ohio.   Includes 1865 discharge certificate, 2x copies of 1865 service certificate, 1865 appointment as 2nd Lieut., 1888 bounty claim, and 1907 pension document.

Discharge document, 1 Jan.   1864. This is when the unit would have veteranized. (very dark tape stain across one fold)

Appointment as 1st Sergeant 1 March 1865, signed Henry Stratton.  

Second appointment as 1st Sergeant in the 19th Veteran Vol. Infy. 15 May 1865. Signed James Nash.

Appointment of Bennett as 2nd Lieut. in the 19th Ohio Veteran Vol. Infy. Signed by Governor Charles Anderson. 13-1/2 x 17 in. with Ohio paper seal. 1 Nov. 1865.

Document from Treasury Department, 2nd Auditor's Office informing Bennett he had received all the bounty payments to which he was entitled. 13 Sept. 1888.  

Bureau of Pensions document stating that he is entitled to a pension of $17 per month because of "diarrhoea, and resulting disease of rectum and indigestion." Signed James Rudolph Garfield (President Garfield's son). 11 May 1907.  

William Bennett (or Bennette) was born in Columbiana County, Ohio. After the war he lived in Hartford, Michigan and was a member of GAR Post #20 (Ellsworth). He enlisted as a corporal and was made 2nd Lieut. by the end of his service.

The 19th fought at Shiloh, Corinth, Stone's River (where it lost nearly half of its men - 213 of 449), Liberty Gap, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Rocky Face Ridge, Cassville, Pickett's mills, Kennesaw Mountain, Hood's First Sortie at Atlanta, Lovejoy's Station, Franklin and Nashville.
