For your consideration is a unique oil on wood titled Grey Doug, dated 8-18-90, and signed on the verso by California artist Julian Hills. This painting was acquired from a curator and gallery owner from Los Angeles with a collection of artworks ranging from Barry McGee to Picasso. Dimensions: 26h x 20w. In excellent condition. According to the artist, "The subject of this painting is Doug Roberts, who is an art dealer in Los Angeles, and was also the subject of a great many works by David Hockney. Doug lived in an apartment behind my duplex in West Hollywood where I lived with my girlfriend in the early nineties. I painted and drew Doug many times. David Hockney was a big part of all our lives at the time and visited us often. When this painting was exhibited at Newspace Gallery, I was able to give David Hockney a private tour of the show. I was nervous as hell, but I do remember he liked this painting a lot and he called it "Potato Eater Doug.” I had a few shows in the early nineties; they were exciting and sold well, but then someone called me to design a movie poster and that just kept going. I've never stopped painting and drawing (which explains my inaccessible garage) still a wonderful, magical thing.” Julian Hills is now one of the most highly regarded creative minds in entertainment advertising. In 1994 he took the helm of Universal Pictures in-house print advertising team, creating campaigns for numerous releases including Babe, Liar Liar, Happy Gilmore, The Frighteners, and Casino. A few years later, he also created the brand identities for The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Shrek franchise and Madagascar. More recently, he founded The Bulldog Agency where he has created print campaigns and branding for The Hobbit franchise, The Lego Movie, Storks and many others. He has taught design and typography at UCLA, continues to paint, and plays with his band at the Viper Room every once in awhile.
