American artist, Robert Motherwell, was one of the founders and principal exponents of Abstract Expressionism, who was among the first American artists to cultivate accidental elements in his work. Motherwell painted in series, groups of paintings of similar technique and colors, and was an acknowledged master of the medium of collage. He had a particular fascination and preference for working with paper.
