Although Engelhardt has favored abstraction throughout her career, her works have always been inspired by the landscape of Northwestern Zealand in Denmark, where she grew up, with links to the natural world conveyed via her color palette - in this case, a myriad of blues and greens accompanied by lighter shades of cream - as well as a wide array of textures and gestural techniques. "The Sixth Day" (2015) belongs to a group of paintings that form part of a series that was exhibited at the Elizabeth Harris Gallery, New York, NY with "The Second Day" (2007), "The Third Day" (2009), "The Fourth Day" (2011), "The Fifth Day" (2013), and "The Seventh Day - Genesis" (2017). Born and raised in Denmark, Engelhardt has lived in Colombes, France just outside of Paris since 1981 with her husband Peter Brandes who is also an artist. This said, her work is still rooted in her childhood on Sejro Bay. Her works have been collected by many reputable institutions, and she has had solo exhibitions at the Elizabeth Harris Gallery, New York, NY; Heltborg Museum; Soro Kunstmuseum; Johannes Larsen Museet, Kerteminde; Gallery Weinberger, Copenhagen; Museum Sonderjylland, Haderslev, Denmark; DCA Gallery, New York, NY (2000, 2003), and more.

Three Maja Lisa Engelhardt abstract paintings were recently sold for handsome hammers in June, 2021: "'So' (Lake), Paris" for $8,841 (Bruun Rasmussen - June 9, 2021 - lot 852); "Composition, 85" for $6,876 (Bruun Rasmussen -June 9, 2021 - lot 864); and "'Tumulus', Paris" (1995) for $10,972 (Bruun Rasmussen -June 8, 2021 - lot 697).
