Description
1656 Sir Thomas Browne Religio Medici Philosophy Urn Burial Amsterdam English
“We carry within us the wonders we seek without us.”
― Thomas Browne
Sir Thomas Browne was a 17th-century English scholar known for his studies in science, medicine and especially theology. His most known work was Religio Medici, a controversial theological testament of psychology and philosophy. Browne uses scientific imagery to illustrated religious truths, something the Catholic Church highly disapproved of. Shortly after its authorized publication, it was immediately placed on the Prohibited Book Index. This book widely influenced authors such as Thomas de Quincey in his Opium-Eater as well as physician William Osler who was known to have memorized it! (Bliss, p. 45)
