Item Details
Description
North America, United States, Pennsylvania, Allenstown, ca. 19th century CE. A frontiersman kit including a leather satchel, a powderhorn with a wooden plug, and a wood and steel knife. The satchel, or possibles bag, is great for holding every "possible" thing the rugged mountain man would need and has a minimalist construction: deer hide panels sewn together to create the pouch, and thick leather straps. The knife and powderhorn are tied by leather cords and a deer or bovine bone toggle to the bag’s strap. The knife has a wooden handle with a brass wire wrapped around the top. The blade is curved with a rounded tip for cutting tobacco and is stamped "NATIONAL SELLING CO / ALLENTOWN PA." The powderhorn is made from a cow horn with a wooden cap at the end and a brass loop for suspension. Size of powder horn: 6.25" L x 2.25" W (15.9 cm x 5.7 cm); leather satchel pouch: 8" L x 7" W (20.3 cm x 17.8 cm)
