Denton was a noted artist and naturalist who was commissioned to execute a series of paintings of fish and sea life native to the waters and coasts of the state. Chromolithography is an exotic printing process wherein a highly skilled artist draws each color on a stone plate, then transfers the images from those plates one at a time to a special sheet of paper. This process uses as many as 20-30 separate plates, making it very time-consuming and rarely used. Because the graphic artist had to re-interpret the original painting when he created the plates, chromolithographs are considered original art. Gorgeous, clean impression on thick paper. 5 x 9.5 image on 8.25 x 11.25 sheet.
