Black and White Kingfisher - very sharp image of this interesting species done into a collectible chromolithograph by Louis Prang. Prang was a notable American color artist/printer, one of the finest in the 19th century. This is an actual vintage plate from J. G. Wood's "Animate Creation," published 1898 by premier book publisher Selmar Hess. Chromolithographs are created by drawing each color of a work of art on a stone plate, then printing those images one at a time on a special sheet of paper. The process uses as many as 20-30 separate plates, making it very time-consuming and rarely used, thus making them fairly scarce. Because the original painting is reinterpreted when the artist creates the plates, the resulting chromolithographs are considered original art. Beautiful impression on clean paper with small and light stain at lower left edge (will not show when matted). Original protective tissue present. 5 x 7.75 image on 9.625 x 12.625 sheet.
