The Finest 18th Century Drawing of Lisbon.

EXCEPTIONAL LARGE PANORAMIC VIEW OF LISBON from the civil parish Alcântara, including the convents of Madre de Deus and Beato Antonio. The drawing shows the situation after the Great Lisbon Earthquake on 1 November 1755 when the Royal Court, nobles and functionaries had moved to Alcântara from where they enjoyed this impressive view on the city along the river Tagus. Bernardo de Caula made another but smaller version with title and legend in Portuguese in 1763, while from the literature it is known that around 1886 Herman Schütte used a French original for his drawing with German text (now in Museu da Cidade). Our much larger view is dedicated to Charles Albert Guillaume of Colson, court counselor of Count William of Schaumburg-Lippe, who during the Seven Years' War, led in a brilliant campaign the allied troops against the Spanish invader. After the Peace Treaty of 1763, when this drawing was made, Lippe stayed to train the Portuguese army to the standards of the time. Legend with 64 toponyms, churches, public places and buildings.

Laid Paper: (C. & J. Honig, coat of arms surmounted by lys de France, cf. # Heawood 1824, 3346, 3348), margins added up to a height 40,8 cm (restaurated tear with loss of paper in the left water part and at the right end side, reinforced margins, light foxing and some clear water stains). Mounted between 2 black wooden sticks.
