Note: At the start of the War of 1812, the American frigate USS Constitution encountered the British frigate Java while cruising off the coast of Brazil. The vessels engaged in a highly technical battle that caused significant damage to both vessels. In an attempt to board the Constitution whose wheel had been shattered, Java came under fire and lost her foremast, then her remaining masts were damaged. Java's Captain Henry Lambert was killed and the First Lieutenant surrendered to Constitution's Captain William Bainbridge. After removing British prisoners it was determined that Java could not be towed so she was set on fire and destroyed. Constitution made her way back to Boston where a hero's welcome greeted the captain and crew.
