South Carolina land deed dated April, 1818, pertaining to 200 acres of land in the Sumter District being sold by Thomas Sumter Senior to Thadrake N. Bellups, deed signed by Thomas Sumter with a flourish; 13"W x 16"H--- Includes hand-drawn map of the 200 acres dated Feb. 9, 1818, and signed by Hastin Jennings, Deputy Surveyor; map also signed on back side by Thomas Sumter for receipt of payment; 7 3/4"W x 13"H; both pieces together in black wood frame with glass on both sides; 16 1/8"W x 32 3/4"H---Thomas Sumter, nicknamed the "Carolina Gamecock", was a soldier in the Colony of Virginia militia and a brigadier general in the South Carolina militia during the American Revolutionary War. British General Cornwallis described Sumter as his "greatest plague". After the Revolutionary War, he returned to South Carolina where he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and to the U.S. Senate, in which he served from 1801-1810. The town and county of Sumter, South Carolina, and Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor are named for him. (Ref. 109)
